What it tastes like
Melodic bass — sometimes called melodic dubstep or anthem bass — emerged in the mid-2010s American festival scene as the emotional cousin to standard dubstep and trap. Producers like Seven Lions, Illenium, Said the Sky, and Dabin pulled trance’s harmonic sensibility and vocal-hook structure into bass-music BPMs (140–150) and drop dynamics. The genre lives at festivals like EDC and Lost Lands, and on Spotify “feels” playlists.
A bar in and you’ve got it: a half-time drum pattern at 140–150 BPM (so it feels like 70–75), lush chord pads playing wide minor 9ths, and a vocal hook built around an emotional lyric — heartbreak, hope, longing. The drop drops the vocal and brings in a massive supersaw or screech bass that follows the chord progression. It’s trance with a bass-music chassis.
The chord moves
Melodic bass loves wide minor 9th and major 9th cycles — i–VI–III–VII in natural minor, voiced huge across two or three octaves. The genre wants emotional weight, and the wide voicings give it the cinematic stereo bloom required.

The groove
Half-time drums at 140–150 BPM — kick on 1, snare on 3 (cut-time feel, so it sounds like 70–75 BPM). 16th-note hi-hats with rolls into the drop. The drop is huge — a single new bass tone or a chord stab that hits like a thunderclap.
The vocal carries the verse; the drop hands the lead to a screech-saw or supersaw that plays the chord roots in syncopated rhythm. The build into the drop uses classic trance dynamics: snare roll, white noise riser, moment of silence, then crash.
The sounds
- Pad: rich poly synth playing wide 9ths. Long attack, long release. Sidechained.
- Drop bass/lead: layered supersaw + screech FM patch. Plays the chord roots in syncopated 8ths or 16ths.
- Vocal: emotional pop vocal (often sampled or featured). Center-mixed, lots of reverb and delay.
- Drums: layered trap kick + snare drowned in plate reverb. 16th-note hats with rolls.
- FX: white noise riser, reverse cymbal, snare roll. The full trance toolkit.
Production tells
Want it modern? Cleaner mix, less reverb on the vocal, brighter top end. Modern melodic bass (post-Illenium) leans more toward pop production values.
Want it 2014-Seven-Lions-vintage? More reverb on everything. Wider stereo. The drop should feel like it’s coming from inside your skull. Master at -8 LUFS for festival impact.
